“I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had to go to Germany. It was inspiring to see the work of Bauhaus students, the places they lived, and where they studied. I will forever appreciate being able to go on this trip!”

Gunta Stölzl Homage

Until recently, the successes and talents of the women of the Bauhaus have not been given much attention, even though their contributions were fundamental in paving the way for advancements in both art and design processes. My project highlights the innovative work of Gunta Stölzl, a female student of the Bauhaus who played a significant role in the growth of the Bauhaus’ weaving workshop. Gunta embraced the Bauhaus form, created unique textile work, and championed her craft to become the only female Bauhaus Master.

Being able to visit the Bauhaus locations and see where Gunta studied was life-changing. After having researched her life, it was a spiritual experience to see it all in person; I do not think it would have been as moving if I had only read about her online. I’m grateful for this opportunity and I know it empowered me to persevere as a woman in the design industry. Gunta fought for women’s rights so that future female designers and artists would not have to struggle.

My textile project is a homage to Gunta and it reflects her important influence through my use of shape, materials and color. Although Gunta primarily focused on weaving, my use of punch-needling in a rug-making form expresses our shared interest in fiber through a process that is prominent in my own work.
